Child Protection Officer or Officers

Every Church should elect a Child Protection Officer. This appointment must be made with the approval of the Church or Organisations governing body (PCC, Deacons, Elders or equivalent).

The Officer will ensure that the policy and procedures are implemented and that the document is kept up to date with new information.

They must be a suitable contact point for any concerns about the welfare of any child or young person.

The Officer’s contact details must be easily available for any member of the clergy or congregation to access. These may be displayed on a Church Notice Board or other public space.

The Officer must be aware of what procedure to take if a member of the congregation or clergy raises a concern about an individual.

Here is a sample Flow Chart that can be adapted for your Church or Organisation.

In terms of understanding the basics of child protection, every church leader or worker should consider the following:

  1. What is child abuse?
  2. Signs of possible abuse
  3. How to respond to concerns or allegations of abuse
  4. How to keep children safe

Good working practice includes:

  • Treating all children and young people with dignity and respect
  • Respecting personal privacy
  • Being available, but also being ready to refer a situation or problem for someone more experienced to deal with
  • Being sensitive to needs, likes and dislikes
  • Avoiding questionable activity eg. rough/sexually provocative games and inappropriate language
  • Following accepted guidelines relating to physical contact
  • Challenging unacceptable behaviour
  • Reporting all allegations / suspicions of abuse
