An Enhanced CRB certificate is required as necessary for a person having regular unsupervised contact with children or young people and is the recommended level for Vicars, Curates, Churchwardens, Deacons and other children’s and Youth leaders.
An Enhanced CRB check includes all recorded criminal convictions, current and spent, dismissals, cautions, reprimands and warnings. They may also include “soft” intelligence such as records of police investigations that didn’t result in conviction and will include a check on the lists, up until recently, maintained by the DfES and the DoH and now maintained by the ISA (Independent Safeguarding Authority), of those considered unsuitable to work with children or vulnerable adults.
The CRB certificate though valuable, may not, however, provide a complete picture of a candidate’s past and should be seen as only one part of the checking process. Obtaining appropriate references and speaking to previous employers are just two steps that can also help determine whether an applicant is suitable to work with children or vulnerable adults.
Note that the requirements are changing.
